One of the most common questions parents and students ask when starting the IB Diploma Programme is: Should I take IB Maths Analysis & Approaches (AA) or Applications & Interpretation (AI)? And once you've decided that, the next question is: Standard Level (SL) or Higher Level (HL)?

It's a genuinely important decision β€” and getting it right can make the difference between thriving in maths and struggling through two years of material that doesn't suit your strengths or goals. Here's everything you need to know.

What's the Difference Between AA and AI?

Both courses cover core mathematical content, but they have very different philosophies:

  • Analysis & Approaches (AA) emphasises algebraic rigour, proofs, and abstract reasoning. It's the more "traditional" maths course β€” if you enjoyed the structured, rule-based nature of GCSE or IGCSE maths, AA will feel familiar.
  • Applications & Interpretation (AI) emphasises real-world modelling, statistics, and technology. It's designed for students who want to apply maths to sciences, social sciences, or business β€” rather than pursue pure mathematics or engineering.

Think of it this way: AA asks "How does this work, and can you prove it?" while AI asks "How can we use this to model the world?"

AA HL vs AI HL: The Big Divide

At Higher Level, the gap between the two courses widens significantly. AA HL includes:

  • Proof by induction and contradiction
  • Complex numbers (including polar form and de Moivre's theorem)
  • Further calculus (implicit differentiation, integration by parts)
  • Vectors in 3D with dot and cross products
  • Paper 3 β€” a challenging extension paper requiring sustained mathematical argument

AA HL is widely regarded as one of the most demanding IB subjects. If your child is considering engineering, mathematics, physics, or economics at a top university, AA HL is often expected β€” or at minimum strongly preferred.

AI HL, on the other hand, goes deep into statistics, probability distributions, and mathematical modelling. Students use graphical calculators extensively. It's rigorous in its own right, but in a different direction β€” more suited to students aiming for biology, psychology, geography, or data-driven business programmes.

What Do Universities Think?

This is where the choice gets high-stakes. University admissions requirements vary:

  • UK Engineering, Maths, Physics (e.g. Imperial, UCL, Bath): Almost universally require AA HL. Many explicitly state AI HL is not accepted.
  • Medicine (UK/Australia): AA SL or HL is strongly preferred; some accept AI HL but check each university individually.
  • Business & Economics (e.g. LSE, Warwick): AA SL or HL is the typical requirement; AI SL is sometimes accepted for non-quantitative programmes.
  • US Universities: Generally more flexible β€” strong performance in any IB maths is fine, though AA HL with a 6 or 7 carries more weight.
  • Hong Kong Universities (HKU, CUHK, HKUST): Specific requirements vary by faculty; STEM faculties typically require AA SL at minimum.

Key rule of thumb: If your child hasn't ruled out a STEM degree, choose AA. Changing from AI to AA mid-course is painful; the reverse is far easier.

SL vs HL: How to Decide

HL adds roughly 90 additional teaching hours and covers substantially more content. Choose HL if:

  • Maths is required or preferred for your intended university subject
  • Your child consistently scores in the top band and finds maths enjoyable
  • You want to keep degree options open (particularly for STEM)

SL is appropriate when:

  • Maths is a supporting subject, not a core one, for your university plans
  • Your child's strength and passion lies elsewhere (arts, humanities, languages)
  • The workload of three HL subjects is already at capacity

One important note: AA SL is not "easy." It still covers calculus, trigonometry, functions, and statistics at a meaningful level. Students who underestimate it often struggle by Year 2.
